Description

The Holston River below Cherokee Dam has one of the most abundant amounts of aquatic insects of any of the Tennessee tailwaters.  Unfortunately however it has problems with high water temperatures in the height of summer.  For this reason it is managed by TWRA as a put and take fishery and has no special regulations.  Another problem on the Holston is access.  There is only two official TWRA access points.  All other access is granted by land owners and you must gain permission before hand.  Despite everything that the Holston has against it, it still produces some really good fish every year.  Rainbows can push twenty inches and there can be some spectacular caddis hatches in the spring and summer.  The Holston is not one to be overlooked and holds some surprises.  Please practice safe wading practices and be sure to check the generation schedules before you go.

The Holston River is a Tailwater fishery so always check the Generation Schedule before you go.
